Why Radio & Music Industry Sucks Nowadays

Why Radio & Music Industry Sucks Nowadays offers an interesting look at the state of radio, and touches on why podcasting and Internet radio are becoming such important media for young radio listeners.
Thom Yorke from Radiohead is a dumb f/uck. People “circulate” music on the net isn’t because they can’t find it other places. It’s because they are getting it for FREE! Duh! Most of the music getting swapped is major label junk.
Also…
I like how the guy at the 5:30 mark in the video is such a creep he wants to bleed the money from kids cellphones because they don’t have credit cards.
When the record companies quote a number on “pirated” music, I tend NOT to believe it.
Its supposed to be an underground economy, out of sight, off the books. The best that people can do is give you a “guesstimate.”
There is no way that its all their music and there is no way that its anywhere as large as they claim it is.
They’re pulling numbers out of their asses and hoping for an uncritical evaluation by their “friends” bought up on Capitol hill, (who don’t have the time to listen to any of the music [even if they had any inclination to do so.])
I totally agree with Frank Zappa at the front of the video (which tells you how OLD the problem is. [He died in 1993…])
I’m not a music industry guy by any means…but this struggle is not much different than many other we face today. A massively disruptive platform has left corporations scrambling to shore up revenues at the expensive of their greatest assets (the musicians). But what many of these musicians forget I think is that without “the man” performing the distribution/marketing/promotional functions for them…that a majority of these superstars would still be toiling in clubs for their bar tabs. We like to believe that stardom and artistry “sells itself” but it’s simply not true in most cases. However messy and unfair the system is, it’s the system that grabbed many struggling artists their next meal, the ability to afford drugs and women, and a nice tour bus. Now that we have web disruption, the artists rising to the top and taking a stand in the “New Web World Order” are enterprising business people in addition to being musicians. It’s funny because I still hear the same angry cries from the hardcore music folks about how all music is crap except for what they think is truly the good stuff. Then, when their stuff makes a breakthrough to mainstream it’s crap because they sold out. This whole situation is nothing more than the same “artists vs. the man” arguments we’ve seen through all history. If they’re really doing it for the art, then let the money find you and don’t “sell out”.
If you are tired of youtube but want a way to connect with artists and musicians and their videos then you should check out http://www.putiton.com
If you are tired of youtube all together than you should probably leave your bedroom and go interact with the real world đ
