Share Video Podcasts Wirelessly On The Zune

Microsoft Zune podcast guru Rob Greenlee brought our attention to a little-known feature in the latest Zune firmware – wireless podcast sharing:

You can now send video podcast episodes to other Zune devices using its built-in WiFi radio. This means that if you have found a cool episode from the Best of YouTube podcast that you can send it to a fellow Zune user and then that user can watch that episode on their device and subscribe to it all in the Zune device software.

While the video podcast episode is playing – just click and hold the middle of the Zune touch pad until the subscribe screen pops up. Then click on “subscribe” and when you next sync your Zune it will add a new subscription to your “Collection” area.

I think that is way cool and nothing you can do in an iPod.

Rob’s right – this is a unique feature and, like the Zune’s other wireless features, something you can’t do with an iPod.

I haven’t tried this out yet. Like a lot of Zune owners, I haven’t found many opportunities to get social with other Zune users.

What do you think – is wireless podcast sharing a cool feature?

It seems like an interesting idea, but it’s a feature I can’t imagine I’d use all that frequently. I’ve got an iPod, so it’s not something I could do even if I wanted to, but I rarely find myself wanting to share podcasts. Wireless downloading of new episodes, yes, but sharing? Eh.

I’ve got a Zune – but have actually never run into anyone that has one.

What I’d like to see, though, is the ability on the iPhone to browse and subscribe to podcasts on the fly, and to send links to cool podcasts via email, like you can send photos from the iPhone.

Well, i have the Zune 80, and i go 2 a high school. There’s about 5 kids that i know that have zunes already. I’ve influenced 3 of them to buy a zune. So we all can do the wireless sharing stuff. And it is pretty cool when your bored, have noting to do, and just wana find something entertaining. Also, you can now look at what their listeining to and their recent plays right from your own device. It’s great. you can say, “oh, hey you listen to ‘Bullet For My Valentine’?” and then they say, “Yea i love them, and dude, u should check out their newest song!! it’s amazing!!!! Here, i’ll just send it to you.” And then i instantly have an awesome song on my zune.

    Zune Social Rocks!!!

Andrew – thanks for the feedback. I’m glad to hear that you’re able to use this feature. Wireless support is cool, and the Zune is helping to push this forward.

I’m hoping that the third gen Zune software will be more compelling and give the iPod more competition. I’d like to see Apple do more with their wireless capabilities.

  7. Zunes are best!
Only report positive stuff from now on.

  8. i noticed this, and i went to try to find out some way of tricking the program to think the file was a podcast.
ive tried it all, renaming the genre to “podcast” (like you do for the mp3 3play bypass trick), copying the files over to where the zune program saves the podcast files. then i finally thought of trying something different, try making an small page that shows up as an rss feed.

    i tried it. it worked!

so i decided to make it able to have the video file and names and stuff stored in the url, so people could easily use the trick. i did that, then i created a small form that created the rss url..

then, since i knew how to download youtube videos as mp4, i decided to make the generator also change youtube urls to direct mp4 urls. so the site is youtube friendly.

if you want to use it, its
