PodShow Is Dead; Now “Mevio”

Apr 23rd, 2008 | By | Category: Internet TV, New Media Organizations, Podcast Distribution, Podcasting Networks, Video, Video Podcasts

PodShow, the heavily-hyped podcasting startup from podfather Adam Curry, is dead; it’s changing its name to Mevio.

NewTeeVee attributes the name change to a so-called “curse of the ‘Pod”” – the idea that any company with “pod” in the name is cursed. They note that PodZinger has changed its name to EveryZing & PodBridge has changed its name to VoloMedia.

When podcasting is growing 40% year to year, though, with some surveys pegging podcasting’s growth as high as 87% year to year, it’s a mistake to pin the troubles of PodTech and PodShow on their “pod” names.

PodShow has raised and spent close to $24 million over the last couple of years, but its business case appears to be stalled with its stars pimping GoDaddy codes. That’s a problem they aren’t going to fix with a name change.

Mevio expects to be profitable by the end of the year – but I’ll be surprised if we don’t see some very high-profile defections from the “Mevio” camp before then.

PodShow jumped in head first way too early. The podcasting market has YET to really go mainstream. Then to throw out your established brand name and adopt a seriously generic web 2.0 name in an insanely hypercompetitive video market spells one thing…..doom.

Just like the New Media Expo dropped the word “podcast”…..WHY? That is why people went to the conference in the first place! And there are only about a hundred other new web 2.0 media conferences out there….they….have….no clue.

Nice google bait headline. Here we go again…

Why are there no “by lines” in these articles? I’m not sure how the previous commenter knew the author’s name.

You said, “PodShow has raised and spent close to $24 million over the last couple of years, but its business case appears to be stalled with its stars pimping GoDaddy codes. That’s a problem they aren’t going to fix with a name change.” What the Hell does this mean? There are people making a VERY NICE living “pimping GoDaddy codes.” That campaign has been going on a LONG time, so apparently Godaddy is happy with the results.

Maybe they have switched to “pimping codes” because ITS WORKING?

Maybe after starting this company they looked at what worked and what wasn’t and focused on the areas that are working?

While other companies have removed “pod” from their name with no flack, when Podshow does this it’s somehow evidence that they are financially on rocky ground? It’s about working smarter. Taking steps and evaluating how you are doing, making adjustments, and repeating.

I know, I know, “Podshow”, ooops I mean “Mevio is the Devil.” Why not register that domain http://www.mevioisthedevil.com and use my Godaddy promotional code cooler3 to get it for $6.95 a year.

If things were going well for these people, they would not be changing the name. At least ‘Podshow’ implies something, a show, a place you visit to [allegedly] be entertained. The new name means nothing beyond an apparent attempt at cool. As for the guy on the video, some might say his look and attitude are much better suited to a used car lot, where you might find him in five years. This is not like radio. Nobody can ‘own’ podcasting. Period.

This has already happened. From what I have been told, most of the original podshow employees / VPs have left.
