Should The iPhone Support Flash?

Jul 8th, 2007 | By | Category: iPhone, iPods & Portable Media Players

There’s a lot of discussion going on about Apple’s decision to ban Flash from the iPhone.

From all appearances, this looks like it was a business decision, not a technical limitation of the phone. The iPhone is likely to double Safari’s market share very quickly, and it looks like Apple isn’t interested in using this development to strengthen a competitor’s technology. Apple also doesn’t want to make it easy for you to make Internet phone calls…..

The FCC has a proceeding that could force the issue going on right now.

Skype has asked the FCC for a declaratory ruling that would extend the older ‘Carterfone’ ruling to wireless providers. That will if granted enable anyone on any network to use Skype or any other similar software, or other software such as music download services, etc.

Apparently they don’t like anyone going to other music sites either, so you have to use iTunes to load music onto it as well as purchase it via that phone. Anticompetitive.

The comment and reply comment periods has closed, although the most recent things involve notices of conversations the wireless industry has had with the FCC in an attempt to thwart the Skype petition.

There are over 4600 comments, replies, and notices of various sorts. About 80 percent of them are form filings or ‘boilerplate’ comments all reading almost exactly alike. I filed six comments in this in the comment period a few months back.

I think the Iphone is a useless overpriced piece of junk with a nice user interface. What does it support? Quicktime? More Garbage.

Let us be honest. Apple does not care if you make Internet calls or IM from the iPhone. AT&T does however care! AT&T has always had a “screw the customer” attitude (just search ATT customer service in Google or Consumer Reports). Apple’s plan is to drive wifi and make phone carriers obsolete. Just look at the major cities that are going wifi. Finally, Adobe is also known to be a pain in the butt to deal with and I am sure they thought they had a gun to Apple’s head. But, Apple had the balls to launch without Flash. Net, Scoble is right … it was a business decision.

PS-I think people should purchase an iPhone before they talk smack (e.g., Keith). It is a super device with nothing but potential and the ability to change the cell phone game.

Sorry for the second post … but, the next link I hit makes may point about wifi … AT&T watch out!

“A tipster sent us a recent corporate presentation at SouthWest Airlines that twice mentions that “Inflight wireless internet connectivity” is being looked at. Rather predictably for an airline, this is mentioned on a slide discussing future revenue opportunities — hey, dems airlines gotta get paid! — but at least they’re thinking about it, right? As such, we can probably expect the in-flight rates for said “wireless internet connectivity” to be equivalent to the altitude of the plane. We’ll know more as soon as SouthWest starts getting specific on the deets: when they do, we know which airline we’ll be booking the next time we have to fly internal.” Source – Engadget

So, that it? Apple will not do anything about the flash problem? I think it is very unprofessional for apple to just ignore this issue…..

  6. I keep listening to the news speak about getting free online grant applications so I have been looking around for the best site to get one.
