Feast_of_FoolsClosing out the official activities on the first day of the Podcast and Portable Media Expo in Ontario, California, was the second annual Podcast Awards Ceremony.

Previously announced winners of the PME Awards for Podcast of the Year were the folks who produce Grape Radio. In keeping with the gravitas of the occasion, the winners all mounted the stage to accept the award with beer bottles in hand.

Winner of the PME Podcast Person of the Year was Leo Laporte of TWiT.tv, who also delivered the opening keynote of the conference.

Todd Cochrane, of Bluburry, organized the People’s Choice Podcast Awards. He said that 3,285 sites were nominated this year, and 82,914 ballots were cast with 1.1 million votes for favorite podcasts in over a dozen categories.

Among the winners of the People’s Choice Podcast Awards were Fausto Fernos and Marc Felion, above, of the Feast of Fools podcast. If there were an award for best-dressed podcasters, they would have won, hands down. They accepted their award for Best GLBT podcast sporting retro smoking jackets (Fausto’s in a brilliant blue) with matching ruffle shirts.
Podcasting Father Roderick, below, was two-time winner this year for his Catholic Insider program (Best Mobile Podcast), and Daily Breakfast podcast (Religion/Inspiration). He was cheered by a large contingent of Catholic podcasters.

Roderick joked in his acceptance speech that the Roman Catholic church is seen by many as being inflexible and “immobile.” Because of this, he was very amused and glad to be winner of the Best Mobile Podcast award.
Dawn and Drew

Dawn and Drew, above, won best Mature podcast for the second year in a row. Don’t think they qualify as mature? Let them know at their call-in line, 206-666-FUCK.

  1. We were absolutely thrilled to win this award, and to be one of the first GLBT people to win any type of this award for any type of media category. When you think about it, not very many gay people are acknowledged in the Emmys, Academy Awards, Golden Globes, etc… so it means a lot to us personally that we won. That’s why I gave my husband Marc Felion a big kiss on the lips onstage, because we’ve never seen it in any awards ceremony. That’s why people are listening to podcasts, because it gives them a picture of humanity that we’ve not seen anywhere else before.

These guys deserved this award. They have done what NO other podcaster has ever done! They touch subjects that no one else has and probably never will!! They are not afraid to say what they have on their minds and they notice the little people! They have such a massive fan base that helps the tremendously! I am honored to know these guys and wish them nothing but the best in life, and to move foward with their soothing voices and heart felt subjects! BRING ON THE VIDEO PODCASTS!!!!

I was moved by your obvious joy when you ran up to accept your award. Congratulations again on being recognized as the most popular podcast in this category!

Thanks, too, for your participation in the discussion the next day at the Podango un-conference booth. I have been thinking a lot about what we talked about: the power of podcasting to shed light on private matters and to take those discussions into a more public arena.

Kind of a nice life’s mission to aspire to, yes?
