Portable_Media_Expo_2005Next weekend’s Podcast and Portable Media Expo is all set and ready to go, event organizer Tim Bourquin says.

“We’ve been planning this event for nearly a year. It’s like a bobsled – you start pushing it downhill, and, after awhile, it picks up momentum and speeds on its own.”

In an interview with Podcasting News Publisher Elisabeth McLaury Lewin, Bourquin described highlights of the two-day event:

  • Leo Laporte, of the TWiT.tv podcasting network; Ronald Moore, the television executive behind the Battlestar Galactica Podcast (and tv show); and Andrew Barron of Rocketboom will be delivering keynote addresses, which are free and open to the public.
  • Breakout sessions are channeled into five general “tracks,” ranging from Podcasting 101 to business and corporate podcasting, to special-interest and hobby podcasting.
  • Podcast recordings of all breakout sessions will be available after the Expo.
  • Dozens of exhibitors will be showcasing their wares throughout the two-day event.
  • People’s Choice and PME Awards ceremony Friday, September 29.

The full interview is available as an MP3 file below.

Laporte, one of the keynote speakers, is also the recipient of this year’s Person of the Year in Podcasting, and will be honored at a reception Friday, September 29.

“The recipient of this award is someone who’s always had a positive influence on the growth of podcasting,” Bourquin explained. “It’ll be interesting to hear what Leo has to say. Last year, he said it would be tough to get advertising on podcasts, including TWiT, but just recently they’ve announced advertisers” on the show.

Asked about what to expect at *next* year’s Portable Media Expo, Bourquin laughed and said, “We’re already looking ahead. Video podcasting will be exploding over the coming 12 months, and there’s that entire user / citizen-created content world, too.” Plus, while the event will still be in Ontario, California, next year will feature a three-day gathering.

The Podcast and Portable Media Expo 2006 takes place next Friday and Saturday, September 29 – 30, at the Ontario (CA) Convention Center.

This is great – now I’m totally psyched up for the Expo!

  2. John says:

This event is LAME. The lameness begins with the location of the event (what, no budget, can’t have it in a real city?), and deteriorates from there. A wanker trying to squeeze money out of start ups. Shame!

    John

Did you go to last year’s expo?

Tim did an excellent job of putting on a professional show, especially given that it was the first year and attendance was about double what was originally expected.

Why do you think it was lame?
