Director Kevin Smith is using iPods and video podcasts to promote his latest film, Clerks II.

Clerks II
Smith joined Superman’s Bryan Singer and other directors by creating a Clerks II video podcast that provides an insider’s look into the making of the film.

The Clerks II podcast looks at mullets, Ben Affleck’s thoughts on being in a Kevin Smith movie, The Tongue Song, why Rosario Dawson would be in a filthy picture like Clerks II and the movie’s premier.

Film video podcasts are an interesting tool for promoting films. At their best, they promote the film without “selling” it, by providing information that would appeal to people interested in the movie. In addition to the video podcast, Smith has created an DVD-style audio commentary that can played along with the movie.

“For me, it was a no-brainer,” Smith said. “[My friends and I] would sit around and talk about the movie anyway, so why not offer it for fans?”

Although not the first experiment with non-DVD commentaries (the SciFi Channel’s Battlestar Galactica series offers downloadable tracks on scifi.com), this is the first designed to be heard inside a movie theater.
