Digg, a popular social networking news bookmarking site, introduced an update today that makes podcasting a major feature of the site. The site is also emphasizing video bookmarking, making multimedia much more prominent than it had previously been.

The change could dramatically change the face of podcast discovery, as Digg focuses on the viral spread of new podcasts. It may also tend to draw listeners away from podcasters’ sites, because you can listen at the site. Community discussions may be more active at Digg than at podcasters’ sites, too, because Digg has hundreds of thousands of active visitors.

Digg also announced several other changes.

Digg Goes Widescreen
Digg has gone from a fixed width layout to a flexible one allowing you to make use of your screen real-estate on larger monitors. Navigation has also been moved to the top allowing you to quickly switch between sections.

Top 10 Stories/Videos
Digg stories move fast, so the site has created a quick view of the top 10 hottest on Digg, updated in real time. This list changes as other stories accelerate in Diggs.

Videos Enhancements
Aside from giving Videos their own position in the top navigation, Digg has added Top 10 hottest videos and on-Digg video previews. Click any video with a play icon to get lightbox window in which you can preview and Digg the video.

Podcasting
Now you can Digg your favorite podcast series and individual podcast episodes. Not only can you see a list of the most popular podcasts by section, you can also dive into any individual podcasts to see the most Dugg individual episodes.

Profile Enhancements
The profile has been updated to make it easy to jump between Dugg News, Videos, or Podcasts.
